Inspiration is Everywhere
Making a mixtape that relates to life situations and references on art/music/film/cool stuff, sharing creative recommendations, making art, and hosting my radio show, Electric Radio Club.
As someone who is a major fan of the movies, I always tell people I could never be an actor because of having to deal with constant rejection.
Then it occurred to me that life can be one never-ending audition. I’m always “trying out” for new opportunities. I am the leading role as well as the casting director. I think about who would be a good supporting role? What is the right community? And most importantly, scouting for the best location to set life’s scenes in motion. But rather than focusing on the magical movie moments that happen, like when the sun shines on a rainy day, I tend to rewind scenes in my mind where critics may have given me a thumbs down on my choice in “costume”, lifestyle and the art I create. Reminds me of the song lyrics……….. Plenty of those old tapes playing inside my head
But like in the movies, there’s nothing like a great song that complements a great scene.
I’m currently obsessed with the Movie Theater Questionnaire on 11am Saturday. Film can be so influential on the soul and I love reading about other people’s movie experiences. The Criterion’s Closet Picks on YouTube is also another rabbit hole that I don’t mind burrowing myself in.
As mentioned in previous posts, the reason I create video art is to translate a sound into a vision.
In case you missed my essay, Movie Walks, on how I conjure up art ideas, you can read about here. I’m thrilled to share my music video, Dazed in a Detour, which was featured at a local film festival. I’ve submitted it to a couple of other festivals, but I got tired of waiting to “be picked”. The response to this work has been so positive, why would I bury it away until another organization “approves” it? Creating video art based on someone else’s music is both thrilling and daunting. Will the band like my translation of their work? Did my creative vision align with theirs? These are things I think about. Luckily, the creative stars aligned and I’m super proud of this music video. Hope you like it too! The collaboration went so well that the musician asked to use a film still from my video. It is now the single’s cover art on the band’s Bandcamp page!
I’m a lady who loves a music coffee table book. In fact, that’s what takes up most of the space on my bookshelf.
So when I stumbled upon Rock Talk Studio, it was an instant subscribe. Rick of Rock Talk offers great reviews on his podcast with a “don’t bore us, get to the chorus” approach by creating short reviews of the latest music books and music documentary releases. Last week, I got a wonderful surprise from Rock Talk Studio that I won the giveaway for the April book pick, Queen & A Night at The Opera; 50 years! I must say, this book is gorgeously printed, I mean, it’s Queen, I wouldn’t expect anything less than fabulous. It contains some truly tremendous photography and history of the band, which is a welcoming addition to my music bookshelf. Perfect for a Rock n’ Roll Queen like me.
Catch the replay of last week’s Electric Radio Club which is themed around movies and life’s script, who we cast in our “movies” and the main character we aim to be.
I’ve included the extended playlist from last week’s episode for some music motivation including tracks by Joe Strummer, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The Beaches, Cheap Trick, Ponta Preta, Laura Lee, Matt Berninger and more! Electric Radio Club airs every Monday at 7 pm CST and Saturday at 10 am CST on ElectroMagnetic Radio, a community radio station that is ad-free and listener-supported. It is a privilege to be part of a great community and to provide a curated music playlist for all to enjoy. Comments are closed.
