I've been thinking about the magic and motivation that is influenced by a melody. What is it about song lyrics that ignites something inside the soul? Whether its taking the long way home or making a career move, music has this unexplainable power to take action. I created a very special episode of Electric Radio Club. The songs I curated are based on those moments of feeling lost and yet hopeful in this thing called life. Who hasn’t felt confused about which path to take in life? Well, I have. PLENTY of times. But before I get into the special, here's my weekly dose of things that I love this week. Music: Raspberry Moon by Hotline TNT I can't get enough of this pop-shoegazey band, Hotline TNT. The album, Raspberry Moon, feels like capturing the summer sunrise on VHS. The music feels bright and distorted. Movie: The Ballad of Wallis Island My first thought watching the intro to the film was This is going to be awful but I ended up really loving it! To be truthful, I was moved! In short, a music duo (who are exes) are asked to play a private gig for a fan who is offering a big paycheck. However, the fan is downright clingy, annoying and invasive and kinda reminds me of John Candy’s character in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. It's a movie about the power and value of art, both for the artist and the fan. Worth your time to watch. Misc: Widow Basquiat I’m currently reading Widow Basquiat by Jennifer Clement which is about the famous painter Jean-Michael Basquiat’s girlfriend, Suzanne. It reads like a diary with short chapters and not a lot of extra wording when describing a scene. Totally my jam. If you love anything about the NYC art and music scene in the 80s, this is for you. So, what’s so special about this special radio episode? As I mentioned earlier, lyrics can sometimes feel serendipitous, like an unexpected guide from the universe. But there have been times when I’ve ignored those lyrics. I think about the doors that have opened for me and didn’t go through. At the time, I wasn’t interested in going through that particular door. I look back and think, what if I did go through that door? Would my life be any different? In the words of Alanis Morissette, “It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take.” Similar to the story Alice in Wonderland, the characters she crosses paths with are offering guidance and directions to help her get through Wonderland. But Alice, at times, feels directionless. I relate. So decided I needed a special radio show episode inspired by both pivotal and pathless moments in life. And because I was an 80s/90s kid/teen, I miss this thing called liner notes so I created my own CD insert for this special episode. Here’s a trailer I made for the episode. Like all episodes of Electric Radio Club, you’ll get a dose of inspirational commentary along with 1 1/2 hours of music PLUS a CD booklet with instructions and a mini Electric Radio Club poster.
And in true mixtape fashion, the tracklist will be revealed during the episode. Don’t worry, you will still get access to the playlist to save for future plays! You can purchase a digital or physical copy of the episode on my website. A great playlist for any trip you plan to take in life. Thanks for being here! And like always Stay inspired, |
